However, with the profiles.ini method that I use now, there are no other files or folders in that AppData Firefox sub-folder, so there's no confusion about where the files truly reside, and because the ini file always stays the same, AppData rollbacks are not an issue. Years ago (when I first started using portable versions of Firefox as my main browser instead of installed versions) I used to use a symlink to the program folder (like you're doing) but I never liked that method because if anything happens in AppData then it also affects my real install (for example, rolling back a restore point will roll back your AppData folder and this can have unintended consequences for a separate folder that you thought was safe). I'm in the process of switching full-time to Waterfox, but I'm still using it stand-alone at the moment (rather than as my main system-integrated browser) but it wouldn't surprise me if I had to continue doing the same thing for Waterfox too (just with a different AppData path) because, after all, Waterfox is essentially the same program. The weird thing is that the path to where I have Firefox located MUST be in short DOS format, otherwise Firefox just keeps creating a whole new profile in the AppData folder and ignoring my proper profile that is stored with the program itself.
